An extension to an existing science centre that resides in an old industrial building converted for it’s current use. In addition to providing new spaces for the science centre, the new extension also houses the Northern Ostrobothnia Museum, which will transfer to the new building from their current location nearby. The location has strong industrial roots but is developing fast into a more housing focused urban environment. The new extension nods towards the industrial brick history of the location but takes a twist for a unique approach. The building extends from the original science centre towards the most common direction of approaching the building , giving it a strong precence. The design leaves open an important pedestrian route by not connecting to the old building on the ground level, thus also leaving open and untouched more of protected old building’s facades.
