Alvar Aalto Museum Annex
Jyväskylä, 2015
Competition entry in collaboration with Heini Hiukka and Kati Moilanen
The small annex building is meant to connect two separate museum buildings both designed by Alvar Aalto. The new volume also incorporates a museum shop and a modest amount of other functions. The design opens generously to both the urban entrance side and the natural garden behind. The lightness and openness aim to offer a small respite from the closed exhibition spaces when switching from one museum to the other. The hardest challenge of the competition was to create an accessible connection between museum buildings with wildly differing floor heights.
