Sara Hildén Art Museum
Tampere, 2021 –
International competition, First Prize
The competition winning proposal tackles the challenge of placing a new museum building in the sensitive historic Finlayson area, right in the center of the city of Tampere. The new museum combines a tectonic approach to build suitable exhibition facilities for a contemporary museum with creating elevating urban space within the historic industrial area. The result is a building consisting of deliberately sized volumes that conform to the local scale. The building is a continuation of the area’s long lasting tradition of high quality masonry construction. The interior serves a sense of weight and silence as a surprising complement to the richness of the surrounding area. The design aims to provide a solution that is sustainable both culturally and environmentally.
